At Long Last

I am absolutely thrilled, because today is UK release of the recent film adaptation of Jane Eyre.  Finally!  We Englanders have been patiently awaiting its arrival for months.  I hope that after all the anticipation I'm not disappointed.  Commendations from trusted friends and an excellent trailer make me think I won't be.

Have you already seen it?  If so, what did you think?  Good or bad, I can at least look forward to some quality time with Mr. Rochester.

It was alright. I don't think Bronte books translate to film very well. There's too much nuance and mood. But worth the money to see the latest adaption of Jane Eyre.

They did an incredible job with the mood and setting--darkness, candlelight, etc. The actress is amazing, the romance shows the age diff w/o being creepy at all (Thank you Michael Fassbender). I just wish they had spent a little more time developing the romance. C'est bien

Yeah, they deployed elements of the Gothic, but missed the mark.

Just got back from the cinema, and was quite pleased with it overall (apart from the abrupt ending which I was luckily forewarned about). I totally agree with what you said about the age difference, Linda. I wanted to see it again as soon as the credits started to roll. Two hours with Rochester is not enough!

Ah, glad you liked it! I caved and re-watched it this past week. I liked it so much more than the first time around. It makes a difference when there isn't a group of hyperactive girls interrupting the film with obnoxious bursts of laughter at inappropriate moments. If I had been sitting closer to them in the theater, I may have thrown something. If the biggest complaint I have about a film is that it was not long enough, I'd say that's a good sign. :)

So true, Ash! And I can't believe you were subjected to such torturous interruptions during your first viewing. Have they no solemnity for the awe of Jane Eyre? Humph! We'll have to rewatch it together soon. Can't wait to discuss it further with you!

And in case it wasn't immediately obvious, by 'so true' I was referring to your astute observation about the length of the film. Couldn't they have given the end just 1-2 more minutes?!

I liked this version, but I prefer the version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. I agree with you on the ending, way too short.

Jess: it's hard to judge after just one viewing, but I think I'll end up love both adaptations for different reasons. That's what happened with Pride and Prejudice. My heart opened to let in more P&P joy. ;)
